Budgets Shrink, Class Size Grows, Student Achievement Plummets

The effects will be felt in more than just California.

Class-size reduction, intended to increase academic success in the primary grades, is almost universally cherished by parents, students and teachers. But California's ongoing budget drama has forced many Bay Area districts to partially or completely scrap the program in favor of saving millions through teacher layoffs. This fall, many classrooms in the Mt. Diablo, San Leandro, West Contra Costa, San Jose, Newark and other school districts may be stacked with as many as 31 children.

Lower class size-- coupled with a highly qualified teacher-- has been proven to increase student achievement.

Why are our students trumped by tea baggers?
